I've read your post and most of your comments. I'm not sure why you posted here. I think you thought people would side with you, but alas, the majority believe YTA and I agree. There absolutely is a social norm here and with or without nuance or historical perspective, you made the mistake, weren't going to eat it so they took it. Your mistake, their gain. They would not have ordered it themselves to take home and if it was otherwise going to be wasted and there was a chance they'd have eaten the leftovers, you should be happy it didn't go to waste, but it's still your mistake at your expense. I don't go out to dinner with the expectation that I'm buying 2 meals, one for now and one for later, but if I end up with one for later for free, sure I'll take it.

I didn’t particularly think anything when I posted this I genuinely wanted to see what the other opinion was. Because framing it as “doing me a favor” felt incredibly inaccurate. This is maybe the only comment I’ve read that I think is fair point that my mistake was their gain. And I can understand not going to dinner expecting to buy two meals. I especially think thats the case for larger groups where there are more leftovers. But it wasn’t a large group, and they also knew immediately I couldn’t eat it. There wasn’t an offer to share some of their own meals or let me have more of the dishes we intended to split.

Trust me if I wanted the validation I certainly would not have come here. Haven’t heard of agree to disagree before? A thousand you order it, you pay comments are not exactly convincing takes when I am trying to have a discussion and pinpoint the nuances I feel exist. And there are threads in here that have made me understand more about how they felt. I just don’t think they were right even if their feelings could be valid.

It gets easier! I was in the same boat as you because I adopted my cat at 8 months. Patience is really key. She won’t always be like that and a lot of it I think boils down to her curiosity. Cats love to explore and if you deprive them of that they will just find more creative ways to get into messes. When I got mine I was also very stressed at first because he seemed entirely uncontrollable. But he mellowed out within a month and most of that I think was due to just letting him do him. I just had to make sure the house was properly cat proofed (i bought wire covers, laid plastic wrap on the counters for a time) and he could go wild.
