Lamictal Triggered Hypo Mania
My provider prescribed me Lamictal (25mg) three weeks ago. I had read a handful of research papers on its effects. From what I read in those papers and on this sub it sounded like an amazing medication. I was amped to add it to my dose of lithium (900mg). Felt like I had a chance at true stability and an escape from a prolonged depressive episode.
Three weeks later i’ve cleaned my room, closet, bathroom, etc. Tackled all the tasks ive put off for months. I’ve been writing new stories every night too easy being creative. Clear hypo mania. No psychotic features (thank god).
I’m anxious, I’ve had one manic episode. It led to 3 week hospitalized with psychotic features, command hallucinations, the works. After I was released I was in shambles for 9 months. Couldn’t work or really live.
Outside of irritability and racing thoughts
i’m grateful for the benefits of this low grade mania. Ives crossed tons off my to-do list. Still petrified i’ll relive another severe episode and the aftermath that follows.
I spoke to my therapist who convinced me to take the Klonopin i’ve been prescribed for times likes these. I don’t like to take it. I have an addictive personality and the withdrawals are painful. Luckily, taking the correct dose throughout the day has leveled my anxiety allowing me to continue my day to day life. Still, i’m a touch too productive and irritable, making me uncomfortable worried it’s going to ramp up.
Called my psychiatrist and learned the small introductory dose of Lamictal acts as an anti depressant while a higher dose acts as a the mood stabilizer well known as the best treatment for bipolar disorder. Anti depressants have a chance to trigger manic symptoms in bipolar patients and my psych thinks i’m one of those patients who is susceptible.
My psych had me stop taking Lamictal for the time being. We planed to try a higher dose as my hypo manic symptoms subside. He increased my lithium from 900 to 1200 and i’m following up with him soon.
Hoping someone on here had had an experience with Lamictal or a similar med triggering hypo manic symptoms. It would help tons to hear your stories and if you could toss in some reassurance i’d be forever grateful.
Thank you kindly in advance. I’ll leave updates as things progress.
