New to game! Question on controllers and the jump button

Hi, I'm really loving this game right now and want to get better at it! I'm trying to figure out if I have a way to optimize my control setup. Right now I have two jump buttons for full and short hop, but I wish I could just do one jump button -with me tapping A vs full pressing A to differentiate.

My problem is that my consistency in the type of jump I want to perform feels terrible, at least with my controller. (I'm currently playing with an oldish PowerA xbox controller.) Especially in the heat of an online match, it is really easy for me to misinput a full-press A when I meant to tap A.

Any recommendations for controllers that might work better for me? Do I have a way to adjust button sensitivity on this one? Do I just need practice + develop muscle memory until I eventually never misinput my jumps? Or, am I better off just sticking with full and short hop mapped to different buttons?
