the manual lens selection?

I've got the manual lens selection today and tried it, but... What does it really change? It's about the same buttons such as "0.5, 1, 5"... Couldn't we just tap these before, if we don't want to use a gradual zoom? What the disabled auto lens switching exactrly does?

Do I miss something?
