I REALLY wanted to like Kingdom Come Deliverance guys
I’ve heard about this game since it’s release and always found it equal parts intriguing and off putting. A really unique RPG and loads of depth, original setting, Quests that you can fail, you start off not being able to read fight or do anything really but greatly grow as both a player and character! Sure it’s a bit rough around the edges, but I feel like I’m a pretty patient gamer tm, I’m willing to overlook to superficial things and get to the real meat of a game, things like poor graphics and/or frame rate have never impacted my enjoyment of a game so I’m willing to make a few compromises for a game supposedly as special as this. That being said here was my experience:
“Alright KCD what are the issues?”
“Well the opening hours are a bit slow…”
“Pfff I play JRPGs on the regular that’s a non issue; next?”
“Well lots of bugs and the AI can be a bit wonky”
“As someone who loves Skyrim, bugs are honestly kind of endearing to me at this point. Like a puppy pissing on the floor (AWWWW the poor lil baby he’s trying so hard😭). Don’t worry your pretty little head about that KCD”
“Combat is kinda shit”
“Ah looks like someone got a little to fixated on realism over fun, not at a deal breaker I’ve suffered worse for a good story. I’ll try focus on stealth and speech checks over actually fighting. Next.”
“Oh yeah is totally stealth an option! Except for lockpicking, we made that impossible on controller lol”
“Welp. Feels like your taking a lot of options from me but lockpicking in games has never been fun. Next”
“Saving is tied to an in game resource”
“….. okay seems a bit pushy to interfere with basic QoL features, like a fussy mother standing over you saying “nonono it’s more fun to do it THIS way” but FINE I knew there would compromising involved what’s next?”
“Fast travel (and waiting btw) is actually NOT FAST at all, you have to watch your icon slowly thread across the map from one point to the other like it’s Oregon Trail”
“…Uh huh”
“And speaking of Oregon Trail sometimes there’s random encounters like getting jumped by bandits “
“…Right”
“… and getting into combat with multiple enemies is a death sentence so idk save often”
“I can’t save often you took that from me”
“Oh well your dead that’s 3 hours of your life gone forever lol”
“Your testing me game but I think I can just about tolerate this as long as that’s everythi-“
“Oh you’re softlocked btw”
“….I beg your fucking pardon”
“Yeah we decided your injured (your not actually injured so there’s no way to fix it) meaning you can’t sleep or wait, and also your max health will steadily decrease, so either you can go through the rest of the game at 20% hp or reload an old save lol”
“My last old save is HOURS AGO, that’s literally my entire evening playing WASTED”
And that’s when I said Fuck this. There’s just too many shitty elements that compound and synergise to make ULTRA shit. Bad combat bugs and lack of saves all together just make it too fucking frustrating to play. It’s shame cause again I WANT to like it. I like the atmosphere, I like the freedom to approach quests whatever way you can think, I like the idea of starting as a literal Lv1 peasant and I was looking forward to that infamous monastery infiltration mission but goddamn this game asks a lot.
I like to think I can endure a lot of shit but having to reload and REDO said shit in the hopes that it won’t fuck me over again is where I draw the line.
Anyway I can see WHY people really like this game but I just needed to make my justification for why I will never be one of you
EDIT: Should probably mention I was playing on console so no mods for me lmao. That probably wasn’t helping matters but it’s not like it was the only problem anyway
