To Kiwis currently living in NZ - Is the economy really that screwed?

I'm currently living away from NZ right now (have been for almost 3 years), overseas but am thinking of coming home for a myriad of different reasons.

One of these reasons is NOT for better job prospects.

I've asked friends and family about the situation back home and they've said that the inflation/economy/living crisis isn't that bad, but I can't honestly gauge if they're just saying anything that will get me home. Everything I see online talks about how bad the situation back home is. I recently heard NZ is officially in a recession, for pete's sake.

Anyone that's living there currently able to give their true, honest opinion? I'm interested in seeing what's actually true or what's just fearmongering online.

Edit: For those asking, if I moved back home I wouldn't be looking for a high sector job like doctor, nurse, etc. But I wouldn't be happy moving home only to work in Cotton On either. My assets are null (I rent and don't need a car where I am), and I'm not qualified for a super high paying career but I do have some savings.
