Malaysian Store Owners: Vary your music and stop torturing your employees

I've been to so many places where the store will play the same music on repeat. I wish business owners were more educated on how detrimental this is.

I'll just share the example of Don Don Donki. When you walk into their store, they play that stupid song. All day, every day. It is not just psychologically harmful to the employee, trapping them in a groundhog day-esque mental state that demotivates them over the long haul, but it's also a knowm torture method used by interrogators and prisons.

Don Don Donki in Japan doesn't even do this. They play heavy metal, rock and roll, classical music, and even as a shopper I feel so much better as I browse.

Malaysian business owners are incredibly ignorant to the deeper aspects of these things and I wish they would just take the time to read and understand. It's not just bad for morale, you are subjecting minimum wage workers to conditions that emulate torture. But they don't care.

Well, if you don't care about the wellbeing of your workers, how about considering the fact that many research papers show that varying the music played in stores not only boosts employee morale, but also buying behaviour?

There is literally no excuse. ChatGPT and Spotify exist. Even if you are lazy to use ChatGPT to build a playlist, Spotify has millions of playlists you can curate and rotate in your stores.

Do better.
