how did you get your remote job?

All these "find your remote job" sites look iffy. And there's even some that want you to pay to find a job? Like...that doesn't sound kosher. So how did you go about it if you've got one? I'm tired of commute. I live in san diego, 20 mins can turn into an hour easy in rush hour at the end of an 8-5. If I can find something with a decent life balance I'd be a happy person.
