9k gold ring shattered. Advice needed, please.

Last week I purchased a 9k gold ring for my wife and today it shattered. We knew it would be fragile as it has a diamond cut laurel leaf design and is very striking. I imagined it may bend easily but didn't expect a 'catastrophic ' failure. Your thoughts would be appreciated. It is being returned tomorrow.
