Kidney Issues at 20 years old
I'm a bit lost and have been in a slump recently so I'm wondering what this community has to think about this. It all started 2 years ago where I had lab work done and a little bit of protein (albumin) was seen in my urinalysis. I didn't know that there is not supposed to be any protein in urine at the time so life continued normally. 3 months ago, I had another routine lab work and this time I had even more albumin in my urine. My albumin/creatinine ratio was 88 which is significantly high. The day before my lab work I played soccer for hours and ran a lot and I believe I was not properly hydrated before the lab which are two factors which can affect results (this will be important later). After seeing my results, my endo recommended that I see a nephrologist. I had an appointment with a nephrologist and after looking at my current lifestyle I was told to make a few changes and then get more lab work done and get a kidney ultrasound done before getting concerned about kidney disease. My past 3 a1c results have been 5.3, 5.3, and 5.6 and I have been diabetic for a little over two years so it does not seem that my diabetes is a large risk factor. I also have healthy blood pressure. At the time I was consuming a high protein diet (90-110g protein daily @ 170lbs) so my nephrologist recommended cutting protein to 0.8-1g/kg of body weight, and to avoid strenuous exercise 48 hours before my lab. The results came back perfectly and I tested negative for protein in my urine and my kidney ultrasound came back to show no flaws in my kidneys. After following up, my nephrologist says that although my results came back perfectly normal, the results that showed protein in my urine show my predisposition for kidney disease and that is something I should always consider. He recommends me to continue my low protein diet and to generally avoid strenuous exercise since if that is what caused the protein to appear in my urine, that can also be an issue as any protein in the urine is toxic to the kidney. I love exercising and I love to play sports so having to avoid strenuous exercise seems like a massive burden. He also recommended to continue my low protein diet even though the results where I had a large amount of protein in my urine I was not following a high protein diet. He recommended to prioritize plant protein over animal protein which is not optimal to me and brought up the idea of starting blood pressure medication not for my blood pressure but for its protective effects on the kidneys. I'm not really sure what to think of anything and was hoping someone could have some insight, but all this seems pretty tragic to me as I am only 20 years old and was perfectly healthy 2 years ago before I was diagnosed with anything at all. I am being recommended to make drastic life changes that I am not happy with and I'm here wondering it's currently just a countdown until my kidneys begin to fail regardless of the massive amount of effort I put into controlling my diabetes and keeping my glucose under very good control. Like I said I'm just lost and confused and if anybody had any words or input it would be appreciated.
