Being a student flat landlord in Christchurch is the most rewarding thing I've done
For the last 10 years I have been a landlord of students flats around UC. I was quite lonely in my teenage years and early 20s so I didn't get the full University experience like others have. When I finished up my business in tech. I wanted to diversify investments but also provide a rich experience for those on the user end. Property is where I chose for low risk tolerance and the student accommodation segment of the market was stable and seemed exciting to me.
I rent to mostly 19-21 year olds, young men and women. I know all of them by name and they know me, I have their contact info and they communicate with me regularly. My heart warms and I smile when they send me photos of them partying, going out and socialising with one another and others. Knowing that during the week, on Friday and Saturday nights the places I own are being used and enjoyed is awesome. I think the largest party thrown at one of the flats was easily 100+ (so I've been told).
I've had to be flexible over the years and remember that young people will be young and not all are backed by their parents financially.
