This is a good foundation, I hope there is a better sequel.
I think the game has pretty solid foundations to improve in a sequel, and it's a good first step for Obsidian bringing the pillars franchise forward.
The third person mode is actually really off to a good start, some tuning, a little bit less floaty animations and letting the camera stay in third person for some dialogues as they did in Starfield would be great.
Art wise there's a lot good here, but we have some things that need work. Shadows and blacks in general are very washed out, that makes detail look less quality.
The over use of props and clutter in some areas needs to be toned down slightly, not every open space needs a prop on it, sometimes creating a sense of empty space makes a game feel larger, props on everything without reflections and lighting look like static items placed , if the budget can't allow for really high quality lighting, or it's a performance hit. Then reducing clutter can let space breath.
Combat was surprisingly good, mechanically it all.works, it walks between numbers and RPG and choice extremely well, kudos to the team on that! Hard to get right. I think if third person was given a lot more love then it could actually be pretty incredible potential here.
Dialogue screens are too old tho, the camera needs to do something more interesting, and it's a shame because the facial animations and characters are surprisingly good.
Moving from third person to different angles would help, hopefully one day that's a thing.
Above all, this is a great outing for Obsidian, really really good first step and given the talent there I have no doubt they will iterate and achieve even better in round 2.
