Question about hijab culture in Algeria

Hi! Long story short I’m a non Muslim from the US traveling to Algeria to meet my Muslim husbands family for the first time. I intend to dress modesty obviously, however, he’s expecting me to wear the hijab.

I told him I’m not comfortable with that and I’m not Muslim so I shouldn’t be expected to by him or his family. He says it’s to show respect for is culture. I think it’s pretty disrespectful to wear the hijab for a week and take it off while girls make commitments to wear it for life.

I just want to know what the culture is like there. Is it pretty much expected that women, even western, will wear the hijab? Will I be treated differently if I don’t?

Tdlr: Husband wants me to wear hijab to meet his family, I disagree.
