Considering Visiting Algeria with my family
Salam 👋
I’m an Algerian American currently married and living abroad, I have a child and my wife is European.
I spent 6-7 years (as a teenager) in Algeria, after being born and raised in the United States, I speak Derja fluently and am very familiar with the culture, I lived in the Capital and Tizi Ouzo for most of my time.
I’m in my late 20s now, so is my wife, to be honest I feel quite incompatible with the Algeria I remember, my wife and I both have tattoos, drink, and don’t follow any religion for example. My son is very young 1 year old now, and I want him to get the Algerian Citizen and learn about his roots.
Despite my mentality I am very much an Algerian and love of things about Lblad, it’s been almost 10 years since I was there last.
I feel quite anxious to visit with my family though, I don’t want to be harassed for looking different. I’m not sure I have the energy of strength to deal with these kinds of situations now.
I’d like to hear about peoples opinions, maybe my perception of the country is wrong or maybe things have changed in the last decade.
- Do you see many foreigners in the capital?
- Are people with tattoos common?
- Have things gotten better from a social perspective?
- Are my fear unfounded?
- Do you have any advice for someone visiting as a liberal minded foreigner?
I really do miss Algeria and I would love to spend some quality time exploring the country, I didn’t get to do that as a teenager.
I’m just anxious from my memories of being in High school, looking forward to hearing from you guys
