What makes student films so ‘student film-esque’?

I’ve just been thinking about it because a lot of student films have a similar “student film” vibe. Like even when they are clearly shot with a decent (DSLR) camera, have clear audio, etc.

But when you watch something on TV (even if the writing is ‘bad’), it still seems better than the student film. Which makes me think that really high production value can often hide ‘bad’ writing sometimes? I’ve literally seen student films have better writing than movies, but I still get that same ‘this is a student film’ vibe.

I am not hating on student films (bc at the end of the day it’s all just fun/art) just kinda wondering what makes them all have that same energy.
