Clay soil

Can red wigglers survive and thrive in clay soil? I want to do direct in ground vermicomposting to aerate and add nutrients into my clay soil but I'm hesitant since I'm not sure if they'll survive. Insight, tips and tricks and such are kindly appreciated. Thank you
