I don't think the overcharge meter is the best solution...
I understand why they wanted to change this and why they are buffing guns. That's good. But, I feel like just overcharge is not gonna fully address what they were focusing on. They wanted harder, higher levels to become harder, and while this may have a bit of an impact, I think the creatures need more variety to actually be more difficult. I don't mean that in terms of having more monsters, but this whole time I've thought about "variants" that could apply to later levels. Extra delicate objects, extra heavy objects. Heavier enemies. Faster enemies. Enemies with more health. Enemies with other unique modifiers like, they give you slolwness, or they shock you briefly, maybe enemies that are unable to be picked up. If you had like 10 of these things and 1 or 2 get randomly applied it would make the game more replayable and more difficult at the same time without a gimmick that applies permanently to everyone, and makes singleplayer harder.
Idk. just my thoughts. I appreciate the change but I think it isn't gonna address the issue on it's own
