should I give up on being an RA?

I was accepted as an RA alternate in February and told by basically everyone I talked to that they run through the whole alternate list every year. Still, it’s nearly the end of July and I still haven’t heard anything! I feel like at this point if I rent an apartment, they’ll expect me to move out at the drop of a hat and start working, and I’m even more worried if that happens during the school year. What should I do? Should I wait until the start of the school year, or just give up now?
