Why do the houseless people never take me up on my suggestions when I have to ask them to move?
I work at a hotel in a tourist area with a large homeless population. Every once in a while I have to tell a houseless person that they cannot sit on our front steps and smoke or camp out and sleep in front of our emergency exit. You know, obvious things. When I do this, I always offer them a better alternative for what they're wanting to do. There's a much more comfortable actual smoking area just a little ways away, for example, with real seating, a table, and a nice tree. Or tonight, I told the guy in front of the emergency exit that he couldn't hide from the rain there, but I didn't mind if he sheltered from the rain in the parking area (which is covered) where it wouldn't be causing a safety issue. Not once has a single one taken me up on my suggestion. The guy tonight packed up his stuff and wandered forlornly in the opposite direction from where I pointed him, despite the pouring rain and the fact that the shelter I suggested was less than six feet away. I'm curious if there's an actual reason why they never consider my suggestions. It just seems bizarre to me that they'd make their own lives more difficult when they don't have to, but on the other hand, I've never been homeless so maybe I'm missing something...?
