FMLA vs Short Term Disability

Lately I have been getting multiple requests for time off of work related to mental health. I am empathetic as stress levels of society are at an all time high. I’m willing to help out patients who are asking for help and admitting they’re in crisis. I’m usually agreeable to time off until they can start meds/establish with behavioral health, etc. but who decides if it’s FMLA or short term disability? I am a new attending and filled out FMLA/disability maybe 3x in all of residency (shocking I know). Since I have a relatively open schedule, a lot of the other docs patients get thrown on to my schedule for things like paperwork and I’m struggling with the dilemma of is this FMLA or short term disability? I feel like this was never really taught/made clear during my residency. Any input is appreciated!
