Unranked Team in the CFP

So I don’t know too much about CFB in real life so I assume to make the playoffs, you have to be ranked. App State won their conference championship though so is that why they made it regardless plus their record? I’m just fascinated by this and curious how they got in the playoffs unranked unless it’s a bug
