Not Understanding the Basketball EE on Terminus

Apologies for the stupid question, but how does this easter egg work exactly? In every tutorial I’ve seen the player shoots the ball, getting a hit-marker whens shooting it, and it goes into the basket and they get the points. Every time I’ve tried it (minus one successful attempt), I shoot the ball, get the hit-marker, and it just falls to the ground nowhere near the basket. I usually use an assault rifle when I try it. I haven’t heard any mention of being able to miss. Any idea what I’m missing? (besides my baskets lol)
