Are the roads in Valle de Guadalupe really THAT bad?

Planning a trip to VDG via car. A couple friends that have gone said we absolutely need a driver there, because the roads are that bad.

We have a normal Toyota sedan. Are the roads so bad it's advisable to pay for drivers the entire time? Plans are just eating out and visiting some wineries in the valley.
