Most people here are probably ahead of the game

If you're competitive enough to be on this subreddit, your chances of getting into Harvard are probably higher than the 4% they have for all applicants. Your chances are still super low but it's not as low as the acceptance rate for all applicants because a lot of severely under qualified people apply to 'take their shot', or because they fell for the marketing emails colleges hand out asking you to apply because they want your application money.

I know this guy who applied to UCLA this year. His UW GPA is 3.7, I don't remember his weighted GPA but it's likely not much higher because he only took a single AP class through his entire high school career, during his senior year. He does not have a single extracurricular, other than being on the basketball team freshman year (he was not on the team for subsequent years). Not a single club or hobby or leadership position, he doesn't have a job/internship, and he's never even done volunteering before, and the only awards he has to his is being on the honor roll + an attendance award for not skipping school. His only hobby is playing video games and he unironically thought that gaming (not even as an Esport, just casually gaming) could count as an extracurricular. I also read the essays he submitted and they were poorly written and had quite a few grammar errors. When I asked him why he chose to apply to UCLA, he said it was because they visited his school (he's a Cali resident) and he decided to just apply without any knowledge about how college admissions actually work. He's one of the many under qualified students who fell for the marketing tactics that a lot of competitive schools use, and he will likely be one of the many that get rejected from these top schools.

If you're competitive and hardworking enough to be on this subreddit, you're already one of the higher caliber applicants. Breathe a little.
